“Kevin was always there for me,” Mewes continued. Kevin would come get me to do some film or something, and see I was a mess.

“We’d do a movie and I’d come back home and take care of my mom, and I’d get strung out again. “For years, I was back and forth,” he said. Through much of that time, Mewes struggled with heroin addiction. The two continued to work together, appearing in films (many directed by Smith) and TV shows. “I was delivering pizza and people were like, weren’t you in a movie?” Mewes said. Even after performing as Jay in the 1995 feature “Mallrats,” the actor went back to roofing, as well as pizza delivery. In many ways, however, little changed for Mewes. The microbudget film went on to win awards at Sundance and Cannes, and made Smith an indie film cult hero. Performing as Jay and Silent Bob, Mewes is the loquacious and foul-mouthed dope dealer, always ready with an imaginatively crude insult Smith is, for all practical purposes, mute. Over the past three decades, Smith and Mewes have parlayed their friendship into one of Hollywood’s oddest and most unlikely acting partnerships, both onscreen and off. But the two became fast friends, bonding over their love of music and superhero comic books.

One morning, Mewes showed up at Smith’s home unannounced. Mewes, who was sitting next to Smith as he related this tale, laughed. “I was like, ‘Jay Mewes, the dirty boy from in town?’” Smith recalled. Smith, then 20, was working at the local Quick Stop in Leonardo, N.J., made famous in “Clerks.” One day, a couple of Smith’s friends were telling him about this hilarious kid, Jason Mewes, who was 16, and all the funny things that would routinely spew out of his mouth.
